The town of Zakopane, called the Winter Capital of Poland, is picturesquely located at the altitude of around 750 - 1150 meters above the see level, at the foot of the Tatra Mountains, in the south of Poland. The place was discovered in the nineteenth century by Dr Tytus Chałubiński, an outstanding physician, scientist, social activist and a great admirer of the Tatra Mountains and the local folklore. Zakopane soon became very popular among artists, scientists, businessmen and politicians as a charming place for holidays and health reparation. Since then the town has been attracting winter sport fans, as well as tourists who throughout the year enjoy exploring remarkably well-preserved natural environment of the Tatra National Park, with its breathtaking views and diversity of plant and animal life, the brown bear included. The beauty of the Polish highlanders' culture, painting, sculpture, folklore and the traditional style architecture is present all over the town, completed with facilities of a modern, all-year-round tourist resort, e.g. geothermal pools of the Aqua Park and the famous promenade Krupówki, lined with numerous shops, café and restaurants, where local culinary delicacies are served.
